The KOSTYUKS support a national campaign "Keep the Flame Alive" urging Canadian government to recognize the 1932-33 Holodomor in Ukraine as an act of genocide. The International Holodomor Remembrance Flame arrived in Saskatoon on its trip visiting 33 countries to mark 75th anniversary of the Holodomor. 14 April 2008   Serhiy KOSTYUK presented an invited lecture on "Language Needs of Ukrainian Newcomers to Saskatchewan" during the Saskatchewan Teachers of Ukrainian Annual Conference at Ukrainian Bilingual School in Saskatoon. The lecture was based on his survey "Canada and Saskatchewan through Their Eyes". The UCIRC Inc. provided 15 free of charge copies of the report for participants.

Serhiy KOSTYUK presented on "Ukrainian Immigration to Canada" for 17 Ukrainian recent immigrants to Canada as a part of a workshop "Planning Success in Saskatoon" organized by the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Saskatoon Branch. Participants related the topic and presentation on a scale 1 to 10, and 87% of participants evaluated this presentation as "10", 13% as "9".

Heritage Press, Olexandr MOSKALENKO Printing, and the Institute for Social Capital co-published an album "Far, Far Away: Postcards from Pre-Revolutionary Ukraine". The album was designed and published in Ukraine for the exhibit at St. Thomas More College to coincide with the 2007 Congress of the Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. ISC Executive Director Valentyna KOSTYUK supervised printing and shipping, and Serhiy KOSTYUK coordinated this joint Canadian-Ukrainian project.

Despite Canada's commitment to the international disarmament and its leadership in the 1997 Ottawa Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Treaty, advanced by the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Lloyd AXWORTHY, it has been unable to convince the US, Russia, China and some 40 other countries sign this international accord. Is there a difference between Canada's capacity to be a major international player and its real exercise of power? Serhiy and Nataliya KOSTYUK put flowers on the commemorative statue of Lesya UKRAINKA on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, for her 135th Birth Anniversary (25.02.1871). Lesya UKRAINKA was a prominent Ukrainian poetess, dramatist, short-story writer, critic and the foremost woman in Ukrainian literature. She also did masterful translations of works by Homer, Shakespeare, Byron, Hugo, Turgenev and Gogol.

After two-hour polemics over the development of economy, ownership, ethnic relations, family, women, and personal life under socialism, its proponents won (48:45).
